Fear and The Hour

Did you see the Halloween edition of The Hour?
I am re-watching the Fear Show at the moment online. The show is inspiring me to get over a fear I will admit to. It's not snakes, or spiders, or Heavy Metal Bands.
If you listen to the Strombo show on Sunday nights you have the opportunity to message George on his MySpace, or email go@stombo.com or call into the show and talk to George, Bob and Alex of The Hour, live on radio in Montreal CJAD, Toronto CFRB and anywhere if people are listening online.
Two weeks ago I was listening to the show and Bob was talking about being disturbed by the negative fortune cookies he had been getting lately. I made a comment on Georges MySpace that I would do a card reading for him. I wanted to rest his fears about that. I was not expecting them to take me up on it. I was not going to call in because I have a fear of calling in to radio shows... {1-866-866-7387}.I offered to email the reading in, and George and Bob agreed to accept my email reading. George was sweet enough to read it to Bob on air (my hero!).
The other MySpacers later told me they were disappointed that I didn't call. They would have loved to hear me on the radio. I try to do all I can for other fans of The Hour, their encouragement keeps me going.
Fears... I have faced and beaten so many challenges in the past four years. One example; I learned to drive two years ago. I got over that fear of driving thing. Bridges, distances, and finally the 401 itself were part of that fear and I won over every one of them.
I am going to call the show this Sunday! I can't let a ego/fear thing slow me down.
Don't let your fears get in the way of your life! Now I just have to figure out what to say. Part of me hopes they take my call, part of me hopes they don't.

I will be going to The Hour on Monday. I have no fear of saying hi to George in person. Not a scary guy at all, very easy to talk to. I will have a guest with me from Ryersons Review of Journalism (Joe) who is working on an article about The Hour and he would like to include something about our blog. It's going to be an interesting show and I don't even know what the lineup is yet.

fear of radio phone in? try fear of public speaking. try telling that to your english teacher when they assign a major pres and you HAVE to do it OR ELSE. I would have taken a 40 page essay.or reading a novel in two days. or a major test. but a pres? i stayed in the bathroom stall the whole afternoon in order to prepare. i got an a. but still. i would have much rather died in a saw film then do a one hour pres.

Tammy it took a lot of work for me to get from the very shy teen that I was to the reasonably social adult I call myself now. I was never thrilled with public speaking but I knew it had to be done. Like going to the dentist.
My college TV courses cured me of being shy on Camera, and you would think the radio courses I took would have cured me of calling in to radio stations... But the radio course never took our homework to 'air'. I just remembered the first guy I ever 'interviewed'for my radio class project was the guy I married and eventually divorced... How weird is that?
Tammy the getting comfortable speaking in public takes practice.
Start with a small room of people and work your way up.

fear of public speaking would be a major one for me too Tammy and havn't really been in that position but I recall hearing that it helps if you focus only on the topic at hand and not let your thoughts wonder by becoming distracted by the audience ! There must be other tried and true techniques to use that would help.

I don't know who Barrett Hooper is but he/she is pretty grumpy about a lot of things...
I read the article and it pointed out some pretty funny and obviously memorable segements of the show. I see his/her point on some issues. Although the slant is whiney it may make someone who has never seen the show want to watch just to see what it is that Hooper person was so crotchety about.
Is crotchety a word?
In any case I don't think it's going to hurt the growing ratings.
I think Hoopers implications about Mansbridge not supporting George are way off base and only a bit evil...
I will leave it at that.

I am still working on that driving thing....And I hate calling strangers on the telephone.
The artist in me loathes any kind of obtrusive conversation.I might work in retail but you will never catch me being pushy or asking you something about yourself that you'd rather not answer. I am the kinda girl that does the "I share a story, then you share a story, if you feel like it".

Barbara said...

Serah the sharing of stories is why I love The Hour. They explore a lot of stories and in doing that they make me smile, laugh, growl and think. I try to send back to the crew of the show that same energy. I do hope I make them smile more than I make them growl.
How are you doing on the driving efforts?

I'm glad to hear that the ratings are growing, Barbara W. Do you have any figures on that? I'd be interested to see how the ratings are in fact doing in regions of the country where the Hour airs at less than optimal viewing times (ie Alberta and BC). I would suspect not so well.

It's not based on numbers becai\use I don't have numbers. It's just the way I feel Barbara B.
Ya know I am optimistic by nature.

I agree Tammy I enjoyed that link. Thanks Allen.

Um... Whiney was applying to Hoopers style it was not a ref. to George...

Ok 668 I passed along the message...

I think St.George can easily defend himself from all dragons out there... I've got faith in you George.
Now go win an award this weekend.
Have a good time in Vancouver.

Allan Sorensen said...

sorry for the misunderstanding, barbara. My "whiny" comes from the NOW subtitle. Sometimes, when I try to intrude as briefly as possible the phrases can seem a bit cryptic.
It's great you're having fun here, leaving no George stone unturned. Like other fans I'll be checking in to read all your thoughts in the blog - because inquiring minds want to know.
