Huh?

Is it just me or did I just see The Hour's Paul (not the web guy, the one who tells his own jokes) on a Nutrigrain commercial? Odd...
Sorry, this is kind of pointless, but I was just surprised to see a guy from a supposed news show on a snack ad...

Hi Becky. I think Paul is a Second City alumni and is probably happy with as many paying gigs as he can get.
Most performers on The Hour seem to have an outside job. Nile for example, is a stand up comic and takes his show on the road. You can check his schedule on his MySpace. Look for his face on Georges MySpace page.
George, Bob and Alex of course have that world famous radio show to fall back on. Plus George has his own production company.

I saw George Stroumboulopoulos in the audience of the Borat premiere at TIFF.
My brother has the DVD and it was on special features, he pointed George out in the audience.

I didn't know George did voiceover work! Ha but I don't watch that much TV. I have heard Derringer the odd time on bank ads.

i think it's radio voice over he does. which makes sense as a lot of radio dj's do voice over work. you know, they have the pipes. :)

McDonalds?! This is kind of the last nail in the coffin... I've been boycotting McDonalds for many years now, and I now find out he does ads for them.
Plus with the beer sponsoring 'The List' and 'The News'. In my opinion they've sold out.

becky - i don't know how old the ads are. it could have been a few years ago.

although i am kinda with you on the sponsership. not so much the alcohol issue, but sometimes it feels like the whole show is being sponsered by someone.

I can completely see what you mean by the sponsorship thing, but... is it not a necessary evil? It seems like every show on TV is sponsored by something. Would the show even be on the air if it was not sponsored?

Yup. Sponsors pay for ads on TV shows so that the shows payroll can be met so that employees can pay their rent and buy food and buy beer so that beer companies can sponsor TV shows. That's the cycle of economic life or something.
By the way George has not eaten at McDonalds in something like 5 months.

advertising and sponsership are not necessarily the same thing. and i think they are being taken as same thing.

the show definately wouldn't be on if it weren't for advertisers and that's something i accept, but the question on sponsership is something else. for me, it seems odd to watch a "news" program with parts of it being sponsered by companies. but i guess it makes sense, as it becomes more and more "entertainment" based.

i always remember the "news" being sponsered but i don't remember
"the closer" being sponsered. or at least not in the first two seasons. i find it interesting that it has now been replaced by a sponsered segment.

Sorry about the muffins 668. :-(

I recall the weather is brought to you by so and so on my local dinner hour news in Montreal. The sports as well and the ski report... it was all sponsored. Even 'Newsbreak' commercial were brought to us by ...

What I find more interesting is WHO the sponsors are...extremely large corporations. For a show that some feel may have low ratings, I find the fact that it is being "backed" by these large companies a GOOD sign! Typically these companies put their advertising dollars behind programs with decent viewership.

Sorry about the muffins 668!

With the ads, I realize that other news programs have them. But I've just always seen The Hour as a show that wouldn't "sell out" (for lack of a better term), like that. Maybe it's just my family's views that affect this. They're not big on brandnames and tend to go with the underdog company. Plus I noticed George's knowledge/love of indie bands, which I associate with my sisters who are really big in doing their own thing... I guess I somehow came to this conclusion that the show shared the same views as me and wouldn't sell themselves like that.

But recently I've just enjoyed being negative about the overhauled show. In my opinion what I once viewed as George being non-partisan, was actually him being indecisive. I'm sick of watching his smug little obviously-not-written-by-him jokes and his shallow interviews. And as soon as I publish this someone will come and say that I never liked the show and just come here to ruin their fun. But that's not true. I truly cared about the show, heck, I wanted to work on it when I got older. I thought George was losing credibility as a journalist, but I came to the sad realization that he never was one. Maybe he never called himself that, but that's what I thought he cared about. The new entertainment spin on The Hour has showed that's not true.

Sorry, I don't mean to be awful, but I've realized there are a lot of other things in my life that are more real and important to me right now than the show.
