I have to wonder what the motivation is for making this trip.

Seems like we're going to be BBC instead of CBC.

Perhaps George is looking for more song lyrics to share with us on Strombo.com.

Barbara said...

Maybe it's all an elaborate plot to avoid talking about the Grammy awards in favour of talking about the Brit Awards...The Brit Awards will be broadcast on the CBC so maybe it's a simple cross promotion... The CBC promoting itself imagine that.

Cheers!

London trip is not a bad idea...i liked that.. can't wait to see the hour on Mon:).

Allan said...

good point barbara

Grammy Awards I believe have Canadians in them.

Allan said...

What's a trip to Britain without Beckham and Posh and Pete Dougherty and Kate Moss?
Aren't they THE top story in England?
Nah, too hard to get.
How about the father of the guy who was dating Princess Diana?
He's always looking for good public relations and exposure.

You could actually get tickets for London shows??? I didn't think they were taping with an audience? Too bad, I even have some time off this week and London is only a 2 hr flight away.

Anonymous said...

Sigh...here we go again Allan...perhaps you should ask CBC management why they're airing the Brits and not the Grammy Awards.

I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.

George is just doing his job - fabulously I might add.

Allan said...

They love it so much that it appears I leave them speechless.

Barbara said...

Bec I thought you knew... Yeah there will be a live London Audience... It may not be too late to book. Contact

Allan, what would you like George to post on Strombo.com? Do you voice your opinion so loudly on anyone else or is this a personal mission to bring truth and justice to those under the tyranny of George and the Hour?

Anonymous said...

Here's an idea for you Allan - why don't you post something on your own blog, instead of criticizing others?

Perhaps write about something positive - something you actually like, if that's at all possible.

Or maybe you're just scared of what people have to say about you...

Miss A said...

Allan,

No one forces you to visit George's personal site. Stop nitpicking!!!!!!!

Perhaps that nitpicking is the reason why CBC management is speechless where you are concerned.

Bec said...

Live tapings only today and tomorrow :( a bit too short notice, don't think my boss would be too impressed if I called at 9:45pm and requested tomorrow off LOL

Barbara said...

Too bad Bec you'll just have to come back to Toronto for a visit then...

I would like to see what kind of blog Allan would write.

Allan said...

The way people say things is kind of confusing.
Since when have I criticized this blog, anonymous? Never.
My "obsessive nitpicking" is all about the Hour.
As for Strombo.com - is this site not a disappointment to his fans?
In the 4 months since it's been up he's hardly ever posted there. And when he does it's usually just pointless song lyrics - I mean, come on, do You get off on that? If you're looking for wisdom or poetic flair you'd be better off reading Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell or Gordon Lightfoot lyrics instead of the nonsense of the verses posted at his site. It's the music, the melody, the beat and the performance that is the essence of why we enjoy listening. The words are often too cryptic to know for sure what they're saying.
And big deal. You post lyrics instead of sharing thoughts and opinions and what's new in your life. Kind of hiding from your fans isn't it?
Instead George has lately put a lot of effort into his MySpace page, and I think we know what that's all about.
There we find many pictures, even videos, to impress the hell out of anybody. There's even a picture of George standing next to a black man which seems to serve no other purpose than to try and impress people with the notion that George doesn't discriminate. You can think of another reason?
"No one forces you to visit George's personal site" - what's personal about a public site? What's personal about anything he writes? If anything, he hides his feelings and thoughts in just about everything he does. It's his choice.

Every now and then George seems to remind himself that he has a duty to promote new musical talent - he sees it as his way of giving something back. And how does he do it? By playing the music on his radio show, or calling the artist for an interview? No.
Instead, he points to the ceiling and says listen to this - and we get less than five seconds of something as if that's all anybody needs to get hooked. Ridiculous.

When Strombo.com first appeared it focused on "freaky" things. He cooled it and promised a better site but it has yet to materialize.
What would be so hard about sending photos and emails to barbara and letting her post them? since he's so "busy".
He's not too busy to fluff up his MySpace, so you see, it's really a choice on his part.
It's all about George, and not his fans.

Surely the Hour is not the show you wish George was doing. Be honest.
Everyone here can think of a show that would be ten times better, can't you?
Interaction with the audience, music, following instincts. These elements would easily make for a more satisfying experience each night.

Is it really the case that no one here can see how repetitive and locked-in the show is to a format that dilutes what George is capable of doing?

Does anyone here think that it will change by being silent?
Or that being silent is the best way not to offend George, heaven forbid.

There are shows that I think are great - Little Mosque, Dragons' Den and Trailer Park Boys - they can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.
The Hour is a different kettle of fish - a news show that denies it's a news show, an entertainment show that has as little entertainment on it as possible.
I don't find pictures of tanks entertaining.
And why is it on Newsworld if it's entertainment.

Fiiiinally ... the ratings for this show are deliberately hidden from the public because I think we all know they are dismal. even keeping it on the air is simply a pretense that it's paying it's own way - then again, it is a pretty cheap show, with any money being spent either to hire George's friends or send him on trips away from Canada.
It's only on the air because the CBC can't afford to think of anything better (and I've already mentioned what would be better). It is, after all, just a replay of a Newsworld show (that was going nowhere).
So what's going to change things?
Sitting in front of the screen and swallowing whatever they hand you without question?
Well, I question what's on the air. And to that staff member of the Hour who reads this I say "we deserve better you lazy bunch of humourless, unimaginative cowards!"

By the way, it's official, I am so totally a nice guy.

Allan said...

To that last dense person who still doesn't get it:
I've been told to stop talking or move on by some of the people here, but I've not told anyone else to put a clamp on it.
What good is having freedom of speech if you don't use it?
Got an answer?
What good is having a mind if you don't use it?
When Chris Hedges is a guest on the Hour and declares the Christian Right in America are fascists, do you just accept it or think about it?
If we're being asked to think, then should that thinking not be allowed to encompass the Hour itself?
Got an answer?
Nah, don't think, don't question. Just accept everything and call it great.
That's the kind of person big business (the CBC) and the government (the CBC) wants us all to be.
Lemmings, who think they're cool, and are easily impressed.
(and that's not directed at you, barb - you should know me by now)

Yawn. Thanks for that Allan.

Barbara said...

The Hour did post about the Chris Hedges debate pro and con is on The Hour's website... If you interested in that, both sides are represented... lots of debate.

If that's the kind of blog you want to write Allan I am kind of curious why you haven't done that yet.

George and The Hour have been very good at giving everyone access to pictures and info on the website.
George is always nice about me or anyone taking as many pics as I or they want when at The Hour... so I am not complaining.

Do I think George should help us with this blog? well... right now I need more help moving. I would rather he help me with the heavy lifting! Work those pipes George...Yeah... what are buddies for right?
Glad you brought that up.
:-)
oh I am just kidding.
I think I can do the move myself. Besides Jian owes me a big favour...

Anonymous said...

it was a great comment allan. some people here are sooo obsessed with George and jian...why?? they think whatever they r doing it's the coolest thing ever... just pity for them!!!

Allan said...

The few people I find here are either nice or mean. It's only the mean ones I feel sorry for. They're going to hell.
No one here gets paid-by-the-Hour. It's all done out of selfless devotion.
Yet I'm the one accused of obsessing.
And despite the many hours I've spent contributing here and elsewhere, I doubt that anyone from the CBC is going to come and help me move.
Barb might get some real help if she asked real people instead of two guys who are caught up in their own vanity and "too busy".

Mentioning Jian - I was pretty amused over at his site finding his first post to be a series of him apologizing ten times for being born!
Better he should apologize for such lame and repetitive ideas as "today, we play the top 100 songs that start with the letter "N".

Are you allowed to swear on this blog?
Because I feel like swearing after visiting the absurd "blog" that the Hour has come up with.
You would expect a blog by the Hour to be ABOUT the Hour.
Instead, it's a mess of whatever pops into their heads - pretty much like the show itself - revealing how bankrupt they are of ideas.
How much of it is about Canada?
How much of it is about the Hour?

One of the more recent posts by a writer for the show is titled "B Reel From Last Week". And what was so important?
Van Halen
Federline
J Lo
Jessica Simpson
Ozzy Osborne
OJ Simpson

Aarrgghh! Who needs this crap?
You get the sense they all wish they were working at Entertainment Tonight and re-cycling news from the web that everybody already knows.
It's the easiest, cheapest and just plain phony filler for any broadcaster.
And we're supposed to be impressed by this kind of work?
What are they - teenagers?
(Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
But I do resent being treated like a teenager instead of an adult.

Sorry for the duplication - the connection was re-set just as I hit "publish" and it won't let me delete it.

Have you noticed that when you go to look at last night's show on the CBC/Hour web page that you're always greeted with ... " OK kids ...".
How do you feel being talked to like that?

How would your idol George feel if he were in an audience that every night was referred to as kids?

Bec said...

I'm not getting myself into the discussion, I just wanted to point out that the 'black man' posing with George on his myspace page is R.L. Burnside ... feel free to google him.

Allan, why does it bother you so much that people like The Hour?

We may not like everything you like but we don't freak out every half hour and insult you for your preferences.

Your constantly negative rants obviously are stemming from something that none of us can relate to or understand. Something tells me it's not specifically about The Hour but rather other issues that you have going on in your life. Your problems are clearly more deep rooted and possible even personal.

PS - this is the other anonymous posting (not the one who posted most recently)

Allan said...

Yeah, I'M the only one with "issues".
Such a really sinister dig when someone, wholly unqualified, suggests they perceive hidden agendas.
Care to provide a deeper analysis?
Knock yourself out.

Don't know who the "civil tongue" remark was directed at.

Neat info about George's friend.

Todd said...

I find it interesting to see fans of the show argue with one another over such trivial issues. "Stop posting that you don't like the show or its content" - This site doesn't need that kind of comment.

I remember when this site started up it was not intended as a Fan Site where people could come to worship the show and content. This site was created as a space for people to come to be critical. It is also a place for people to come to say what they like.

As Allan pointed out, if we deny free speech even on a comment page for a site that presumes to challenge its audience to be critical, then what is the point?

So please, Allan, Anon, and Barbara, please keep things in perspective - and professional. Because really, if you all continue on like this, it makes sense that George refer to the audience as kids.

Play safe. ;) and please, respect one another.

Barbara said...

When have I denied free speech Todd?
'cept to spammers...they really bug me.

Anonymous said...

I think Todd was referring to my posts...I have no problem with free speech, but I think he could get his points across more effectively without being mean and insulting.

I also think Allan is barking up the wrong tree. As much as he dislikes the way The Hour is done, there's little any of us on this can do to help him get things done his way.

He should be writing his comments to the CBC on a daily basis or begin picketing the building and invite others to join him.

Another idea would be for Allan to schedule regular meetings with Richard Stursberg - mano a mano - so he can utilize his free speech to maximum effect.

Allan said...

I appreciate Tod coming forward with his comments.
And I respect his comments.

Sometimes I take seriously remarks from people who then turn out to have nothing but silly things to say and like wasting everyone's time such as the useless suggestions in the above posting.

I thought we were having a reasonably serious and sincere discussion.
Finding someone injecting the occasional juvenile and usually anonymous comment goes with the territory.
If people choose to post anonymously they could at least help a bit by distinguishing themselves within their comment by a signature or random alias.
I suspect tharere's only one person in this place who seems determined to insult and scare away anyone with a critical opinion.
Criticism is not inherently a bad thing. More people speaking honestly is always a good thing.
Or would it be preferable if people had no opinions at all or only opinions that are acceptable to the powers that be?
Dare no one say that a reunion by The Police is just another Sting tour because he's run out of ideas?
I beleive that in time my remarks will found to have more merit than I'm given credit for here, and that it's possible this forum will make the Hour THINK about the choices it makes.
My bet is that someone out there appreciates hearing more than just a repetition of how awesome is the George and how cool to learn that Barbie was created by Nazis.
There are so many amazing things to learn about and celebrate in Canada, but you wouldn't know it from watching the Hour.
It's a bewildering contradiction and ultimately depressing as hell.
But I'm keeping hope alive.
I suppose no one here remembers what Chris Hedges said was the definition of Hope ...

Allan, how is it absurd to suggest that you air your concerns with the CBC?

There are others on this blog who have criticized The Hour but they have never insulted someone's body type for example, like you have, to get their point across. That is immature and absurd.

If I may use my free speech - I also think it's hypocritial that you criticize Strombo.com as a blog when you have done nothing with your own.

Todd wrote:

I think the problem most people here have with Allan's comments is that he sometimes comes off really condescending to the people who watch the show and enjoy it. It's fine to hate the show, dislike the show, whatever. And he's right, it's far from perfect. He’s allowed to tear it up as much as he wants. But when some one says things like "you people just swallow it up" or "Nah, don't think, don't question. Just accept everything and call it great" it implies if you like the Hour you’re a mindless sheep. And that is not fair.

I think people should be allowed to say what they like about the Hour without being made to feel like a silly girl crushing on George. If Allan dislikes the show, that’s ok too, just remember freedom of speech applies to everyone.

Anonymous said...

Personally, I do agree with quite a bit of what you are saying Allan. I do enjoy the show and watch it most nights but I also feel there is much more potential there that what we see on the screen.

I would like to see more Canadian content and I agree that the show at times feels restricted by it's structure. I also agree that George seems somewhat closed of lately but maybe that is just a bump in the road.

I am confused... except for spam I have never deleted anyones comments...
I just don't want people calling each other names. So I expressed my opinion about that.
Do I think The Hour is perfect every frame?... I never have.
It makes me laugh, think and growl.
I don't agree with everything. Nor do I care about stories of Paris or Kfed... but I have said that before. Did not seem worth it to repeat myself.
I would not call this a raging debate about The Hour... it just seems like a continuing conversation to me.
Are we good now? Can we move on?

carrie said...

ok, I'm wading in here, to something that has obviously been going on for some time. Seems to me there's more at play than just "The hour in the UK" but I'm not a doctor nor a sociologist.

Here's my 10 cents:
* Yay Brit Awards. The Grammies SUCK. Boring, predictable for the most part, and full of people I could care less about.

* The Hour - I've just started watching this show over the last 3 months, and I'm totally hooked. Strombi's a great interviewer (when he's not being overawed by his personal heroes - hello, Rollins) and I love the content. I'm not looking for more Canadiana; I'm looking for events that I find interesting. This may or may not include Canadian events / people.

* "Hey Kids"... To tell you the truth, the main reason I like The Hour so much is because George is much like me, speaks like me, dresses like me, and holds the same interests as me. So when he opens his line with "Hey Kids" the same way I do in my open emails to my friends, I don't even notice.

* Ratings - man, that's a toughie. The Hour is up against Idol, Lost, and 24. Forget it.

All that being said for the blogging, I think this UK gig is going to kick ass. I'm psyched. And I'm liking the studio George is using over there. Very nice.

Allan said...

What??
I think about what I write, and say what I think at any given moment.
It's done with a significant amount of trust, in the people who are going to read it.
That they're adults who also think, and aren't afraid of ideas and views.
If I've committed the offense of being condescending (which I point out that George is also frequently accused of being) then I blame the comedians I listen to: Howard Stern, Bill Maher, Mike Bullard, Larry David and others, all of them.
It's not Def Lepperd music played backwards.
And I have to take responsibility for what I write.
Really, you think I write this to hurt somebody?
Just speaking my mind, "kids".
More than once here, a poster has expressed complete ambivalence about things "Canadian".
May I suggest that part of the enthusiasm behind the George is the fact that he's one of our own, a hometown boy. Or is that immaterial to you?
Aren't you cheering for a local success story as I do with Trailer, Mosque and Dragons?
Would you rather have another American view of the world? And tell yourself that Canadians aren't as good or interesting?
Mathew Goode, Douglas Coupland, Jan Arden, Bubbles, and so on, really turn me on - more than Oasis or Kelly Osborne any day of the week.
(Come to think of it - when does the "News" ever make fun of Canadian celebrities? It's always cheap shots at easy targets)

Am I being accused of having a personal gripe against George?
Paying attention?
I've always said that more George would improve the show. That I'd rather spend an Hour with him and the studio audience than watch any more sales from celebrities.
The Hour fails more than it succeeds because it falls short of it's potential.
And that's the most obvious thing about the show.
Is it so bad for me to say that?
Should I not care?

Is not speaking freely and emphasizing our own culture what Canadian Broadcasting is all about?
Or is it just meaningless eye candy?
Or an exercise in distracting "kids" with big snakes?

Todd said...

Anon - Why continue with the direct personal attacks? This site is to discuss The Hour related material, not for you to 'dis the weblog of someone who chooses to post a comment on here. If you have more personal attacks that have nothing to do with the show, please keep them to yourself. Like I said before, please respect one another - and try to keep the focus on the show and its topics.

carrie said...

Whoa, Allan, no offense but I wasn't attacking you. I was just weighing in on the interesting bits - and since you're the one who posts the most, you're almost always the author. Chill, man. It's not about you, it's the forum. (Take note, Anon.)

Re: Canadiana. I cheer for the little guys. I cheer for Canadians. I also cheer when I see new and interesting interviews and blurbs about stuff that isn't even remotely Canadian. And I think what makes The Hour really good is the nice balance between the CanCon and the rest. I don't think that Canadians "aren't as good" but I *am* fed up with heralding the latest television show or movie as The Greatest just because it's Canadian.
For example, TrailerPB is great. Mosque... enghh, it's ok. It's different and it's healthy and it can be great, but it's not great.
Make it better. (Which is exactly what Allan is saying about The Hour. We're agreeing - see?)

What did you think about the Brits?
I was kinda hoping for more inappropriate behaviour, but then, I'm a voyeur.

Allan said...

Then take your paddle and ... eh, no, that's a voyager ... OK.
So you like "balance". Me too. In fact, I'd like to balance a bobble-head of George on my dashboard. He lends himself so well to marketing and pouty photos.
Fact is, I don't see a balance at all.
I see a program that goes out of it's way to be anything but one resembling a Canadian show when it owes it's existence to Canada.
But it's more the lame effort that irks me the most.
Here we have such an exciting country filled with dynamic creative people, and the Hour gives us Hulk Hogan's daughter.
Isn't that kind of self-defeating?
The production staff sits on their asses and waits for the show to come to them.
And they're choosing Pee Wee Herman over Bruce Cockburn.
The CBC itself is just re-cycling Newsworld.
I wonder if they're actually living up to their license any more.

When Howie Mandel was on it didn't take long for him to start mocking the show. Because he noticed how the Hour was just so full of itself.
Giving us the news "straight up'? as the billboards say.
What? Is Mansbridge giving us the news "sideways'?

I loved the week in London too :)
George definitely seemed to be in his element. I don't have a problem with exposing the audience to another part of the world. So much of our pop culture is derived from the Brits anyway.

J said...

Every once in a while The Hour inspires me, yeah, it really does. I sit, watch, reflect and discuss. That is the thing about The Hour; it makes me want to know more about things that I just may not have come across in my daily life.
See, I live in a world were people are on automatic. A lot of people my age don’t watch Newsworld or any news, they don’t read the paper, they don’t read anything. The world that I live in is one that is void of news on any scale. We go about our day in some kind of bubble, with no clue about what is going on in the world around us.
But then comes The Hour which presents itself in such a way that may just appeal to some “kid” flipping through the channels, with George’s way of giving the news “straight up”. I have no clue were he stands on most of the issues presented and I like that, I have to look into it. I have to do some research and come up with my own opinions.
I think that is a great thing. I consider myself a “kid”. I really didn’t know too much about politics, international affairs and the like, but I am aware of these things now.
I can thank the CBC for this, for putting a show on the air that appeals to me and people like me.
I think The Hour is a superb show. I enjoy the time I spend watching it, and more so I enjoy the conversation it creates.

Allan said...

In "j"'s world, everyone is on automatic - which means what? They don't think about what's happening around them? - zounds like they're Zombies. Are you in THIS world?
What you describe would only apply to the cast of Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.
And you managed to find a TV that only plays one program. Yet here you are on the internet. What are the odds?
A good place "to look into it." is spelled WIKIPEDIA - it's where George gets the info he uses every night so that you have "no clue where he stands".
You paint yourself and others as ignorant, and the Hour as the only light in your dark world. That speaks poorly of our public education system.
You must be reading something to come up with a word like "superb". Did you find it on the label of a condiment on the dining room table?
Knowing that words like "politics" and "international affairs" exist will be helpful to you later in life, but you won't learn much about them on the Hour.
George never claimed that he is a Rhodes scholar, just a beefcake who can read a Tele-prompter in a way that looks like he's not reading a Tele-prompter.
Look closely and you'll also see a blank stare in his eyes when Chris Hedges uses a word like "oligarchy". (I don't know what it means either but it probably tastes bad).

I have lots of opinions - from silly to accurate, and one opinion is that your posting is a fake and phony effort to pretend to express the view of a typical "kid".

"kid" said...

Whoa!
Maybe I was born “yesterday”, what difference should that make?
And there you go again!
Look, all I am saying is that a lot of my peers just don't find the "news" interesting, they didn't find school interesting. I am not saying that all of the people my age are zombies. Not at all. Neither am I saying that The Hour is the only light in the dark, but it is a great place to start.
The Hour is a great show with great intentions.
On a different note, The Hour in the UK was interesting and I was thrilled to see The Brits on the CBC!!
