More music to wait for The Hour by

Music has always played a pretty important role in The Hour. If you check the website for the back clips of the musicians who have been guests this year alone, you might be as surprised as I was by the sheer volume. George has interviewed, or taken to the newsstand, musicians as diverse as Matthew Good, Sam Roberts, David Gilmour, Ben Harper, Bruce Cockburn, the Arctic Monkeys, Imogen Heap, James Blunt, Nickelback, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, and Wayne Coyne. If you are so inclined, you can watch the majority of these clips on the website to tide you over until the show starts again next month. (I know, I gagged at the thought of watching Nickelback or James Blunt again as well, but you can pick and choose your clips.)

Even more compelling than the interviews with musicians were the stories in the news about musicians. Stories such as Henry Rollins being detained by Australian national security for his choice of reading material on an airplane - Jihad: the Rise of Militant Islam in Central Asia. Stories such as the fight that Notorious B.I.G’s mother is waging to solve her son’s murder. Stories such as the opposition being launched by musicians such as Steven Page and others to oppose the recording industry’s assault against downloading.

My favourite music-related stories from the past two seasons were:
1. Jesus Will Sing Joy Division in BBC Easter Special
– the BBC aired an hour-long musical procession through the red-light district of Manchester to celebrate Easter in conjunction with a celebration of Manchurian music. Among other selections, Mary Magdalen sang the Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen in Love, Jesus sang Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, and joined Judas on a duet of New Order’s Blue Monday, before launching into the Smith’s Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, while being flogged.
2. British University to Offer Course in the Smiths
- seriously, who wouldn’t want to major in the Smiths in university, or at least take it as a minor. Beats the hell out of Calculus.
3. And then there was the story of the Gang of Four - the post-punk band, not the Chinese political party - and the enormous influence they had upon the direction of modern music. It’s hard to believe now that their song At Home He’s a Tourist was once banned from British radio for containing a reference to carrying condoms. They paved the way.

I’m looking forward to more of these sorts of stories on the Hour this season. In amongst all the world headlines, which never really reach any resolution, it’s refreshing to take an entirely different slant toward world happenings.

And from the musical news stories from the past two seasons of The Hour, here are a few songs to tide you over.

Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division

Girlfriend in a Coma - the Smiths

I loved all those stories Barbara. Thanks for the celebration of Manchurian music mentioned on the Hour. What an awesome alliteration.

You are the queen of alliteration, Hilary, and I thought you might enjoy being reminded of those stories from The Hour. You are all about the Smiths.

Check me out! I've never been here before! Makes me wish we had The Hour :( I saw that BBC Easter thing! Very odd. Thank you muchly for the excellent songs.

Hi Kees, Welcome! So nice to see you over here. It is a shame you don't get the Hour in the UK as it is the best thing on tv, in my opinion, but you can always watch clips from it on the website.

But you got to see the Easter special! I'd love to hear about it. We were looking for some kind soul who subscribed to BBC Canada to drop in on that day, but no luck.

Well it was certainly ambitious - it was broadcast live, but it took itself a teeny bit too seriously for my liking. I mean Judas singing 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' is pretty funny right? That said, the last link is footage from someone in the crowd and I think if you were there the atmosphere must have been great.

Kees, thank you! This is absolute gold!

It's considerably different from how I imagined it would be; I had pictured an actual parade (in robes of course) moving through the streets (like a Santa Clause parade), but I imagine that would have been a nightmare to accomplish with all the sound equipment.

I loved the sing-along to Sit Down - my favourite James song. That made my day. Thanks for sharing this.

Refreshing post Barb!
I will try and listen to the links later (although this coffee shop could use a boost of good music ;P)
I want to take a course on the Smiths...I'd wake up at 830 for that!

Thanks Kees!!!
That was pretty cool.
=)

Oh yes, coffee shop music, Allison. Although I have noticed that Bigbucks is selling compilation cds with Bauhaus on them, of all things. Real coffee music there. Well, maybe it is actually; goth kids drink coffee.
I want to take that Smiths course as well. I'd even study!

I'm so happy Kees shared that find with us, Hilary. I need to watch that again. I think.

bauhaus?!

i remember when they used the smiths to sell beer.

i can't wait to check out the youtube stuff.

two artists i took a second look at because of the hour were sam roberts and coldplay.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I love when George does music-related stories on the Hour, Tammy. I'm sure I've forgotten a pile of them too.

And Dylan to sell banking, 668.
If you like music from the Manchester scene at all, you'll love those YouTube clips that Kees found. I wish I had seen the whole parade though.

and i just remembered.. the clash were used to sell jeans. at least they were levis.

and the morale is... never sell your songs rights..:)

Barbara Bruederlin said...

That's always good advice, 668. Fortunately for me I have zero musical talents (aside from playing a pretty wicked set of spcons) so I don't think they'll ever come banging on my door wanting to buy my song rights.

Ouimet said...

I've got to say: interesting story, but upon viewing the YouTube links, the execution was sorely lacking. Like kees said, it took itself way too seriously. And besides that, the talent was just not there.

But in fine YouTube style, this clip of Morrissey singing "Still Ill" came up as "related." Awesome stuff, even in 2006!

Hi Ouimet, welcome and thanks for weighing in on this. Oh yes, Morrissey most definitely still has it, even if he hates Canadians now.
Now can you imagine the Manchester parade with Morrissey singing the Judas role? That would have been a show! Perhaps Johnny Marr could have played Jesus, or hahaha Noel Gallagher!

Thanks for that, Tammy; I appreciate the update.
I guess that now officially makes me the only living person in the known universe who doesn't have a myspace.

BB -
Thanks for the welcome, But you know I've been reading for a long time.

I also liked that link you did to Strummer's version of Redemption Song, which I had never heard.

Morrissey hates Canadians? The seal hunt, I suppose?

668 -
I was wondering what you meant about the Smiths selling beer. So I Googled it.

I had forgotten all about that, Labatt's Ice and "How Soon is Now."

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I of course recognize your name from Todd Maffin's blog, Ouimet - you're quite famous there.
Glad you liked the Strummer version of Redemption Song. It somehow works extremely well, despite the British, not Jamaican, accent. It's from the album Streetcore, which was the last one Strummer recorded before his death.

Yes, Morrissey seems to hold us all responsible for the seal hunt, yet he is not bothered by performing in the land of bull-fighting, hmmm.

668 aka neighbour of the beast said...

Ouimet - i was so upset when labatts used that song. it was the first time, a corporation took something that meant so much to me and used to to sell something back to me. aahhh, i was so naive back then...:)

Ouimet said...

BB-
After listening to the song you provided, I went and downloaded - er, I mean, purchased! - the Streetcore album. It's really really good.

So thanks for that.

668-
I, too, was shocked when I first saw that ad. What a strange choice it was, really. They seemed to only need the song for the opening bit, cutting it off after "I am the son, and the heir..."

I mean, what kind of beer message is that?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Ouimet, have you seen Dick Rude's documentary Let's Rock Again, about Joe Strummer's final tour? It's so worth seeing; 'twill make you laugh and cry.

Ouimet said...

No, I haven't. I've never even heard of it.

I will definitely check it out. Thanks.
