Tonight on the Strombo Show - June 16th, 2013

Best of Strombo!!  k-os and Eric Alper

Trinidadian Canadian k-os (aka Kevin Brereton)  was born and raised in Toronto and spent his teen years in Whitby, Ontario.  The rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer recently released his fifth studio album, BLack on BLonde.  The long awaited double album features a new slate of original hip hop songs (Black) and rock songs (Blonde).  If you're really lucky, you might get your hands on the edition that comes complete with commentaries, giving us insight into the mind and heart of k-os himself.   Here is a cut from the album that just happens to be my favourite.

February 3rd, 1959 near Clear Lake, Iowa, a small plane goes down taking the life of four people.  The victims just happened to be rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and the pilot, Roger Peterson.  The tragedy took three musicians who were flying high in their musical careers and prompted Don McLean to write a song about it - American Pie. That day became known as "The Day The Music Died".  Listen in tonight for more on the story.

Lastly, Eric Alper returns to play "'Three Degrees of That Eric Alper".

The Strombo Show airs on CBC Radio 2 Sundays from 8 pm until 11 pm.

See you there.  :)

Teenage Kicks join George on the show  to chat about their upcoming first full length LP.  With two successful EPs and a few years behind them, the band have put together what promises to be a kickass full length debut LP. In case you were wondering - they did name themselves after the classic song by The Undertones.

Eric Alper (yes, That Eric Alper!) is back on the show for
"Three Degrees of That Eric Alper".  Listen in for the big reveal of what he has come up with this time.

Richie Havens, the American folk / R & B icon will be honoured after his recent passing.  Perhaps best known as being the opening act at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, Mr Havens will be remembered for a musical career spanning almost 45 years.

Shotgun Willie Nelson's upcoming 80th birthday will be celebrated.

The Magnificent Seven will be featured as always along with Tom Waits.

Lastly, George will tuck you in for The Big Lie Down with  Mississippi Delta Blues Masters

Sunday Feb 3
8pm -11pm The Strombo Show CBC Radio 2
It's funny but the three degrees of Eric Alper segment on the Strombo Show must have been taped just after I ran into Eric Alper and Matt Dusk together in the atrium of the CBC. Both men have been guests on the podcast I produce, The Ward and Al Show, that is unrelated to this blog or the CBC. But the degrees of separation are less than three...That's the Canadian entertainment industry for you.
