Strombo is still on CBC Aug 25 - 29

George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight this week
GST is still on at 11:30 pm on CBC and there is not much time left to catch it!

Monday Aug 25 is politician Justin Trudeau

Tuesday is Canadian actor  Yannick Bisson

Wednesday features author and friend of the show Margaret Atwood.
Panel has Emma Hunter, Mark Forward and Arthur Simeon

Thursday everyone's fav astronaut/author/inspiration Chris Hadfield

Friday is the man, Peter Mansbridge

We talked with George Stroumboulopoulos recently when he interrupted his Motorcycle road trip out west and flew in to town to sign the deal that assures The Strombo Show will continue on CBC Radio. The radio show features a lot of very cool and eclectic music chosen by George and his team. He will include occasional music related interviews that may be featured on CBCMusic.ca in a visual way, but he wants to focus on bringing you more music in the spirit of what radio should be. This year he will be seen on HNIC on weekends because he loves hockey but he never stops listening and sharing his first love, good music.  The Strombo radio show begins anew mid September from George's home studio. Turn it up!

Bruce Springteen's High Hopes and Deltron 3030 On Best Of The Strombo Show

It was January 23rd, 1981. Sitting in the nosebleed section at the Montreal Forum, we watched excitedly as the rocker in the blue t-shirt with the rolled up sleeves walked out onto the stage. Followed by his band, he threw his guitar onto his shoulder and stepped up to the mike. After a few seconds, the house lights dropped, the spots came on, and the Montreal Forum exploded with the magic of the Asbury Park, New Jersey band. When he finally left us that night, after a set list  twenty seven songs long , and another four for an encore, we were almost as exhausted as he must have been. We were, however, anything but disappointed. This .. this is why he was known as The Boss.

It is now 32 years later, and Bruce Springsteen is set to release his 18th studio album. He will be accompanied on the album by the E Street band, including tracks recorded by Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici before their deaths, as well as featuring Tom Morello on guitar. The album is scheduled to be released on January 14th. The first single, High Hopes, was released on November 24th.  Tonight, Darby Wheeler returns to the show and will be chatting with George in the broom closet about Bruce Springsteen and the upcoming album.  Welcome back Darby!

One of my favourite albums of 2012 was an album called 12 bit blues by Vancouver DJ Kid Koala. Kid Koala just happens to have joined up with producer Dan the Automater, and Del the Funky Homo Sapien to form supergroup Deltron 3030. They will also be joining G for a chat in the broom closet tonight to talk about their second album, Event II.

It wouldn't be the Strombo Show without a weekly nod to the Gods of Rock and Roll.  On the 33rd anniversary of his death at the hands of an assassin, the life and music of John Lennon is celebrated.

... The Magnificent Seven, the top seven tunes of the week ...

.. Ten O'Clock With Tom (Waits) ..

.. and lastly, the Big Lie-Down or the Collective Horizontal, where George tucks you in to bed with the mellowest of tunes.

You can hear The Strombo Show on CBC Radio 2 on Sunday nights, from 8 to 11 pm.
See you there.  ;)

This week in Strombo June 9 - 13

*Sad news about a member of  the GST show's family. Our condolences to Ken Wanninger's loved ones.
George Stroumboulopoulos (from Strombo's facebook page in his own words)
June 9th 2014
Hi,

Incredible sadness and disbelief.

We lost a dear friend and colleague a couple of days ago. Ken Wanninger was engaged with the world and enjoyed great conversations on so many topics and his loves and passions came through in his work. He had a deep love of film and music and his creativity was on full display in the radio and TV show.

We are honoured to have been in his company, and if you enjoyed our shows, you should know that Ken played a major role in making them sing. Just weeks ago, he worked on the Prince Charles special staying late to ensure the bio was the best it could be - working until he was completely happy with it. It is even still unbelievable to have to write in the past tense as this has been shocking news. A life cut too short.

Much Love and condolences to his family and friends,

George, Tania and the GTonight team
