STROMBO TO PRESENT A SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE

Here is what we heard...
SHAD, PAUL HAGGIS, JENNIFER PODEMSKI, WENDY CREWSON and GEORGE STROUMBOULOPOULOS TO PRESENT AT THE 2013 SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE
Canadian folk-duo Whitehorse slated to perform at this year’s gala.
The 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize will be broadcast on CBC Television at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
CBC is thrilled to announce the roster of esteemed presenters who will participate in the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize 20th Anniversary on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. The five finalists — Dennis Bock, Lynn Coady, Craig Davidson, Lisa Moore and Dan Vyleta — will be introduced by the following special presenters: actress, producer and director Jennifer Podemski; actress and producer Wendy Crewson; screenwriter, producer and director Paul Haggis; CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos; and Juno Award-winning hip-hop artist Shad (Shadrach Kabango). Adding to the evening’s excitement will be Canadian folk-duo Whitehorse, who will perform a rendition of their song Devil’s Got a Gun.

The SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE gala will be hosted by Jian Ghomeshi (of CBC Radio One and TV's cultural affairs program Q), and be broadcast at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC Television from the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Toronto. It will also be live-streamed on CBC Books with a concurrent live chat, enabling Canadians across the country to be part of the Giller experience. With a winner being crowned and awarded the prize that night, the presenters will join the authors onstage to celebrate the year’s biggest achievements in Canadian arts and letters. An appearance on Q the following morning will be the first national broadcast feature interview for this year’s winner.

“The CBC has outdone itself this year,” said Jack Rabinovitch, founder of the Scotiabank Giller Prize. “It’s a very special one for us as it’s the Giller’s 20th anniversary. They have done an exceptional job of finding presenters who are uniquely qualified to speak to the five wonderful books on this year’s shortlist.”

The five presenters will introduce:
Jennifer Podemski will present Going Home Again by Dennis Bock
Wendy Crewson will present Hellgoing by Lynn Coady
Paul Haggis will present Cataract City by Craig Davidson
George Stroumboulopoulos will present Caught by Lisa Moore
Shad will present The Crooked Maid by Dan Vyleta

The five authors on this year’s shortlist were selected by a distinguished jury made up of some of the finest writers in North America: poet, novelist, literary critic and essayist Margaret Atwood; novelist and former Giller winner Esi Edugyan; and American novelist, essayist and short story writer Jonathan Lethem.

The Strombo Show - October 20th, 2013

This blood
Is not as strange as all the buzz
It's sympathy from up above
Soakin' us in blood
And we learn the hard way

(This Blood by The Dears)

Tonight on the Strombo Show .. This band has been described by some as a cross between Serge Gainsbourg and The Smiths. Their frontman has been described as a cross between Morrissey (in fact, he has often been referred to as "The Black Morissey") and Damon Albarn of Blur.  The band?  The Dears.  The man?  Murray Lightburn, their lead vocalist and principal songwriter.  George will be chatting with Lightburn on tonight's Strombo Show.

Mass:Light is the name of Lightburn's recently released solo LP.  Two years in the making.  Absolutely secret, kept even from his wife, mother of his two children Neptune and Apollo, and fellow Dear, Natalia Yanchak.  The album finally saw the light of day in August, all instruments on the album played by Lightburn himself, with the exception of contributions by Evan Cranley and Chris Seligman of Stars on horns, and some string parts contributed by his daughter Neptune's music teacher.  Lightburn will be debuting  Mass: Light at Adelaide Hall in Toronto on October 20th, but George has him performing an acoustic set and talking about his new masterpiece tonight in the Broom Closet.

Remembering Cory Monteith

The entertainment and fan community lost a great talent on 13 July 2013 when Cory Monteith died at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver. His room had two empty bottles of champagne, used hypodermic needle, and a spoon with drug residue. His body was cremated on July 17 following a private viewing for family and fiancé/co-star, Lea Michelle. Glee will air a tribute episode to his character, Finn, on Thursday.

Audiences who wanted to see Monteith after he had passed had a chance to see his final two films, All The Wrong Reasons and McCanick last month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The talented actor was born in Calgary, Alberta to an interior decorator and military man. His parents divorced when he was seven years old and he started experiencing trouble in school and later drugs before dropping out of school at 16. He eventually completed high school and worked various jobs before becoming a professional actor in Vancouver.

In a candid interview from October 18, 2011, Monteith spoke to George about his struggle with drugs, and about how through sharing his experiences, he hoped to help kids who were going through the same things he did when he was a teenager.

Fans will continue to mourn and celebrate the life of Monteith. To see the whole episode, please go here.
