George Stroumboulopoulos viewers will have a lot of exciting programming to look forward to in July.
George is in New York Saturday May 29th day to celebrate Canada's Day International in Central Park for the inaugural free summer festival.
Next, George flies to London, England on Monday 1 July 2013 for Canada's Day London International Celebrations in Trafalgar Square. There will be live television and radio coverage starting at 11:30am from Ottawa and then a live stream of the London concert at 1:30pm on CBC.
George will also have a special edition of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight on July 1 with Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir and Ron James.
Virtue and Moir are the 2010 Olympic champions for ice dancing. The London, Ontario native is currently attending University of Windsor where she is completing a Psychology degree while commuting to Michigan where she trains in Canton. Moir is also from London and attended the same school as Virtue. He currently trains with her in Canton. For more information on them, click here.
Ron James is a Canadian stand up comedian from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. James left Acadia University in Halifax where he was studying history and political science with the intentions of being a history teacher and moved to Toronto where he started his comedic career. He's worked and lived in Los Angeles and been in several movie and television programs. One of the most interesting is his voice work for Star Wars: Ewoks and Robocop: The Animated Series. Please join him at 7pm for some laughs.
Then on Wednesday 3 July 2013, David Steinberg appears on the show. Steinberg is best known as a stand up comedian in the 1960's to 1980's and for directing episodes of Friends, Seinfeld, Mad About You, Newhart, Weeds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfield, and Designing Women. The 71 year old Winnipeg native is also an Emmy winner for his work on Seinfield, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Mad About You. He has worked with an exhaustive list of people including Elliot Gould and Smother Brothers. He was one of Johnny Carson's most popular guests second only to Bob Hope with 140 appearances.
The next night it gets better with Dan Savage. The Chicago native is an American author, media pundit, journalist and newspaper editor who is best known for his weekly column Savage Love and working alongside his husband, Terry Miller, on their project they co-founded called It Gets Better. The project helps LGBT youth prevent suicide. Raised Catholic and now atheist, Savage still considers himself "culturally Catholic" and holds a degree in Theatre and History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He founded Seattle's Greek Active Theatre, but chooses to use the name Keenan Hollohan as Theatre Director. The name is a combination of his middle name and his grandmother's maiden name. You can hear his weekly podcast Savage Lovecast on iTunes.
Then the lord sits in the red chair on Monday 8 July 2013. The Right Honourable Lord Black of Crossharbour, Conrad Black, was born in Montreal to George Monteegu Black Jr who was the president of Canadian Breweries Limited. Conrad controlled Hollinger International, which was once the largest English language newspaper empire with The Daily Telegraph (UK), Chicago Sun Times (US), The Jerusalem Post (Israel), National Post (Canada), and Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) among some of its names. Despite maintaining his innocence in the 2004 shareholder initiated prosecution, Black was convicted of three counts of fraud and one count of obstruction of justice in a U.S. court and was sentenced to six years and a half years in prison in 2007. After some more legal troubles, he was released in 4 May 2012.
Another controversial character steps into the red chair the following night on Thursday 4 July 2013 to promote The Unbelievers. It has been seven years since George was able to talk with his idol, Richard Dawkins. Dawkins is an English Ethologist, Evolutionary Biologist, and Author. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya to an agricultural civil servant in the British colonial service in Malawi. His father was called up in the King's African Rifles during World War II and went back to England in 1949 where he inherited a country estate. Both of Richard's parents were interested in natural sciences and answered his questions with a scientific perspective. Raised Anglican, he decided the theory of evolution was a better explanation for the world and became an atheist as a teenager. After graduating from Oxford and taking up a teaching position there, He received his first critical acclaim in 1976 for his book The Selfish Gene. He has gone on to publish more books such as The Blind Watchmaker and The God Delusion.
The doctor is in the next night on Wednesday 10 July 2013. Ken Jeong is best known for Leslie Chow in Hangover and Ben Chang on Community. The Korean-American actor was born in Detroit and obtained his M.D. in 1995 and is a current licensed physician in the state of California. George talks with Ken about his career as a comedian, actor, doctor and personal life.
The following night on Thursday 11 July 2013, George sits down with Joy Kogawa. The Canadian poet was born in Vancouver and was sent to an intermittent camp during World War II with other Japanese Canadians. She has spent a lifetime trying to educate people on intermittent camps and was made a Member of Canada in 1986 and Japan awarded her the Order of the Rising Sun in 2010.
Scott Thompson joins us as well. Thompson was born in North Bay, Ontario, but grew up in Brampton. After York University asked him to leave in his third year for being disruptive, he joined a comedy troupe The Love Cats where he met Mark McKinney. Thompson is most known for his role in The Kids in the Hall and a long career as a stand up comedian. The openly gay actor was diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkins gastric lymphoma, but is now cancer free.
The following week on Tuesday 16 July 2013, George sits down with David Sedaris. The American author was born in Birmingham, New York, but was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. He currently lives in West Sussex, England with his partner Hugh Hamrick.
The following night on Wednesday 17 July 2013, George welcomes Sridevi. The Tamil Nadu native is a renowned Indian film actress known for her singing and dancing. She is the first female superstar of Hindi cinema and was recently seen in English Vinglish.
The following week on Tuesday 23 July 2013, George welcomes Eli Roth. The Newtown native is best known for directing Hostel and his role as "The Bear Jew" in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. Raised Jewish, Roth can also speak French, Italian and Russian. As an actor, animator, director, producer, and screenwriter with several credits under his name, his name is recognizable in the horror genre.
The next day, on Wednesday 24 July 2013, George welcomes Eve Ensler. The New York native is best known for writing The Vagina Monologues. The American playwright, performer, feminist, and activist was brutally raped and beaten by her father as a child and was receiving treatment for uterine cancer in 2010. Majority of her activism is based on educating people about violence against women.
We hope you tune in for these international and intriguing guests.

Tonight on The Strombo Show - June 23rd, 2013
Here it is. The broom closet. At least it's how I imagine it could be. Over the past few years, the broom closet has been the site of many an intimate acoustic set. Tonight, George will revisit some of those sessions live from L.A. The Arkells, Joel Plaskett, Dan Mangan, The Wooden Sky, Afie Jurvanen of Bahamas are just some of the names that have graced the four walls of the closet. Listen in tonight for some of the best of these.
The year was 1969. The Who had already pumped out three albums, but for their fourth, they had much bigger plans. The four lads from London had put together a masterpiece, a rock opera: TOMMY. The double LP set told the story of a deaf, dumb and blind kid (or hearing, visually and speech impaired youth if you prefer) by the name of Tommy. Here is a trailer for the film:
Tonight's nod to the gods features a salute to this masterpiece by one of the most successful (and in my opinion, best!) bands of all time. The album has sold over twenty million copies worldwide, was performed by the Seattle Opera including Bette Midler as The Acid Queen, and of course was turned into a film. The most successful song from Tommy by far was "Pinball Wizard". Here are The Who performing Pinball Wizard live at Woodstock.
The show will also feature unplugged performances from Bjork and Jay-Z with the Roots.
The Strombo Show airs on CBC Radio 2 Sundays from 8 pm until 11 pm.
See you there. :)

Best of Strombo!! k-os and Eric Alper
Trinidadian Canadian k-os (aka Kevin Brereton) was born and raised in Toronto and spent his teen years in Whitby, Ontario. The rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer recently released his fifth studio album, BLack on BLonde. The long awaited double album features a new slate of original hip hop songs (Black) and rock songs (Blonde). If you're really lucky, you might get your hands on the edition that comes complete with commentaries, giving us insight into the mind and heart of k-os himself. Here is a cut from the album that just happens to be my favourite.
February 3rd, 1959 near Clear Lake, Iowa, a small plane goes down taking the life of four people. The victims just happened to be rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and the pilot, Roger Peterson. The tragedy took three musicians who were flying high in their musical careers and prompted Don McLean to write a song about it - American Pie. That day became known as "The Day The Music Died". Listen in tonight for more on the story.
Lastly, Eric Alper returns to play "'Three Degrees of That
Eric Alper".
The Strombo Show airs on CBC Radio 2 Sundays from 8 pm until 11 pm.
See you there. :)

Catching up with George
George seems to be everywhere lately. He's wrapping an interview this morning on Metro Minute on the CBC and was on Good Morning America three days ago. We here at the Stroumboulopouli are trying to catch up with all the articles, videos and social media following George's summer move to CNN. Some feel uneasy that we are going to loose our beloved talk show host to the Americans, but George has been reassuring everyone that he will return to CBC for a 10th season after his ten episodes with CNN. If you want to join in the conversation about George, here are some selected videos and links.
On May 28, 2013, George swung by The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. You can watch as George turns the tables and begins interviewing Craig on his own show here.
On June 3, 2013, CNN released this promotional video about the show here.
Hopefully, you all caught our post about George on Huffington Post Live on June 5, 2013. If you haven't seen it yet, click here.
June 6, 2013 seemed to be a rather busy day. CNN released two more promotional videos showing George interviewing Martin Short and Wiz Khalifa on his premiere show this Sunday. You can follow the links for Martin here and Wiz here.
Jake Tapper from The Lead on CNN pokes fun at George's name, quizzes him on the meaning of double double, hoser, toque, and other questions. Wolf Blitzer also responds to George's comment about him being the Neil Young of CNN here.
Brooke Baldwin takes a break from Live CNN to talk with George about bringing back "rad", working with a live audience, interviewing Wiz, the infamous lean-in and presentation of questions, and ends with a fun word association. If you want to skip the news on Prince Philip's abdominal surgery, tune in at 0:56 here
Strombo's CNN Facebook page posted a video of Ashleigh Benfield talking to George on June 7, 2013 here. Please visit the page and show your support for George by liking the page too.
Next George will be representing Canada in New York City, USA and London, England for Canada Day. You can read about June 29's event in Central Park and July 1's event in Trafalgar Square here.
Also, some of us here are a bit curious about a blog post asking who would replace George if he ever decided to move permanently to America. Feel free to share your ideas in our comment section or to read the post here.
