Do You Know Your Strombo Trivia Contest.

Happy Birthday to us!
This group blog, The Stroumboulopouli, started May 30 2006 with this post. Some of the bloggers have changed over the years and new bloggers now lend their talents. I thank them all! We celebrated a number of moments over the seasons and look forward to more seasons and more celebrations.  On our 2nd birthday we held a trivia contest with George announcing  the winners on The Strombo Show.  I don't know where the time went and our 6th birthday is coming up fast so lets try that again just for fun!

THE STROMBO SHOW, April 22, 2012

Tonight's Strombo Show, as most Sunday's is a celebration of music. With Baseball season starting and spring in the air we are playing some of our favourite baseball related songs.

We celebrate the best drummer/singer ever who passed this week, and play some of the best (this is debatable) Comics turned musicians. Think Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and even Rodney Dangerfield. Plus as always we have great new music in The Magnificent Seven Countdown.

What has been cancelled at the CBC?

The CBC budget cuts have caused a lot of stress among the people that work for CBC and the viewer and listeners that love it. Some have been holding their breath to find out if their beloved radio or television shows have been impacted. There were whispers that Republic of Doyle might get cut. Good news is it hasn't! But I am sad that The Debaters was. It showcased Canada's best stand up comics in debate action and should have been supported and enjoyed by more people.
Being Erica had some talk of coming back for a wrap up season like Little Mosque had but that seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle.
Here is an article from The Toronto Star listing some the cuts and what is here to stay for another season.

For the record, I was never worried that George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight nor the Strombo Show would be cancelled. Harper would not dare!

Here is more about the budget cuts from the CBC herself.

Why did the Government cut the CBC's budget?

In an exclusive interview that aired last night, Heritage Minister James Moore sat down with CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos to discuss a variety of topics including the federal budget, Canadian content, arts and culture, and much more.

The interview was taped before a live studio audience, and aired (Tuesday, April 10) at 11:05 p.m. (11:35 p.m. NT) on CBC Television's GEORGE STROUMBOULOPOULOS TONIGHT. The interview will be available in full online at: http://www.cbc.ca/strombo/videos.html

Here is a clip from the interview:

James responds that it's not as bad as it seems:
"More than half the jobs that are going to be lost at the CBC over the coming years, over half of them were going to be cut even if we didn't touch the budget of the CBC. These were plans that were being made internally at the CBC regardless of the federal budget." The Minister goes on to say that while funding of the arts is crucial, no one should ever feel they are entitled: "cultural organizations also have an obligation to understand that because they've received government funding, they shouldn't always receive government funding."

Best of the Week: Friday April 6th

A closer look at Friday's Best of the Week episode

To wrap up this week's trek to the West Coast, Friday's musical guests are Vancouver's own Mother Mother and  legendary rocker Nick Gilder, a founding member of Canada's Sweeney Todd.

Mother Mother were formed in January of 2005 by guitarist/vocalist Ryan Guldemond, and were originally known as simply "Mother".  Their self-titled first album was released on an independent label.  In 2007 they  signed a four album deal with Last Gang Records.  Changing their name to Mother Mother, they have since released three albums:  a re-release of their first self-titled album renamed Touch Up in 2007, 2008's O My Heart, and March 2011's Eureka.

Mother Mother have been met with much critical acclaim.  Tune in Friday to hear their mix of vocal harmonies backed by a curious mix of instruments.  You won't be disappointed.

Also on the show will be Canada's legendary musician, Nick Gilder.  Gilder was a founding member of 70s band Sweeney Todd. The winner of the 1976 Juno for Best New Group, Sweeney Todd were best known for their hits  Roxy Roller (1976), (one version which featured a 16 year old Bryan Adams!), as well as 1977's Hot Child in the City.

Gilder's songs have been covered by such artists as Patti Smyth, Bette Midler and Toni Basil. His 25 year career includes ten Top 20 hits in the US, three of which reached #1 in Canada.

Have a Happy Holiday weekend and don't forget to tune in Sunday night to
 The Strombo Show.

The Strombo Show April 1st

There is little that can be said about Sunday's Strombo Show other than it can be found on CBC Radio 2 and it's in the spirit of April 1st. A highlight of tonight show is a feature interview with an outstanding artist musician/poet Saul Williams. This man is an inspiration!
